Day 2 begins!

Daihonzan Eiheiji Temple

The Zen temple introduced by The Washington Post as "one of the world’s most spiritual places.” The vast temple grounds are home to over 70 buildings, 19 of which are designated as National Important Cultural Property. The highlight is the Shichido Garan—seven halls connected by corridors—offering a glimpse into the heart of Zen practice. Encountering a monk in training is common, the experience inspires a sense of reverence.

5 minutes on foot

Eiheiji Monzen-machi Temple Town

After receiving inspiration from the solemn atmosphere of the Eiheiji Temple, head to the lively temple town lined with souvenir shops and eateries. Here, traditional Fukui crafts like Echizen washi paper and Echizen ware await alongside new specialties such as the Eiheiji Daruma Pudding made with local milk and fruit. Stroll leisurely, perhaps tracing the stone monuments inscribed with poems by the Zen Master Dogen, becoming a poet yourself.

30 minutes on foot

Ryotei Tangando

Traditional restaurant featuring a thatched retreat on the premises once visited by Shungaku Matsudaira, the lord of Fukui Domain, and the pro-Imperial loyalists during the late Edo Period. Enjoy the seasonal kaiseki cuisine while gazing at the beautifully maintained moss garden. Before or after the meal, history enthusiasts are invited to explore the garden and the retreat, both featuring related historical exhibits. Walk on the paths and bridges made from Shakudani stone, a famed local stone from Echizen, and reflect on the tumultuous Bakumatsu era.

40 minutes by car

Tojinbo Cliffs

Famous as the dramatic setting for confession scenes in Japanese suspense dramas, Tojinbo is a spectacular scenic spot where rugged cliffs are battered by the rough waves of the Sea of Japan. Walk atop the jagged rock formations and take in the rare natural landscape shaped by geological forces. The area is also known for the elusive green flash—a phenomenon where, for just a few seconds on rare days, the setting sun emits a green light as it dips below the horizon.

10 minutes by car

Mikuni Minato Kitamae-dori Street

Mikuni Minato has been thriving as a key hub for water transport since the old days. Nostalgic charm permeates through the retro buildings such as the old merchant residences and the Former Morita Bank Main Branch. After strolling through town, take a break at a traditional wagashi sweets shop or a cafe housed in renovated storehouse. Do not miss the original local specialty—the Mikuni Burger, made with Fukui beef and the famous Mikuni three-year pickled scallion.

40 minutes by car

Kanshukuen ESHIKOTO

An indulgent auberge where selection between Japanese cuisine at a one-star Michelin Guide Hokuriku 2021 Special Edition featured restaurant, and the French cuisine crafted by a chef recognized by the French gourmet guide Gault & Millau awaits. After the satisfying meal, relax in the villa with semi-open-air bath. Enjoy the ultimate escape from everyday life while gazing at the star-filled sky. The bar also offers seasonal fruit cocktails.
