Day 5 START

Fugan Suijo Line
(Fugan Canal Kansui Park → Iwase Canal Hall)

The Fugan Suijo Line is a scenic canal cruise connecting in about 60 minutes the Fugan Canal Kansui Park, located in the heart of Toyama City, with the port town of Iwase. Along the way, enjoy sights like the “Water Elevator,” which uses the same mechanism as the Panama Canal, as well as Toyama natural landscape seen from the boat. In spring, the route is especially popular for cherry blossom viewing, as the park is listed among the “Top 70 Cherry Blossom Spots in Toyama.” With good timing, you may even catch the enchanting night illumination of Kansui Park!

A short walk

Iwase Town Stroll

Iwase offers breathtaking views of Toyama Bay and the Tateyama Mountain Range. Once a thriving port of call for the Kitamaebune cargo ships—known locally as bai-sen, or "double-profit ships" for their ability to double the profit when carrying goods in either direction. The nostalgic streets, lined with many houses built during the Meiji era, are perfect for a leisurely stroll. Also an area of growing interest, with new shops continuing to open.

A short walk

Shaseki
(Japanese Sake Tasting & Shopping)

(Sake tasting and shopping)

A standing bar operated by Masuda Shuzo, a long-established sake distillery founded in 1893 (Meiji 26). This is a paradise for sake lovers—tasting of over 100 varieties of their flagship brand Masuizumi is possible here. From limited editions to unusual brews not available on the general market, it is hard to narrow the selection!

A short walk

Former Baba Family Residence

The residence of the Baba Family, prosperous shipping merchants from the late Edo Period, includes the main house, front storehouse, First and Second Storehouses, rice granary, west gate, and the west wall—all registered as National Tangible Cultural Properties. The spacious, open design reflects the scale and influence of the Baba Family of the time. Floor plan with highlights is available at the entrance—for a fully guided experience.

A short walk

Japanese Restaurant GEJO

GEJO—by the chef Takahiro Gejo, who traveled the world and served as a private chef in Bulgaria—opened in January 2020. The original dishes and sushi made with fresh fish landed from Toyama Bay are absolutely exceptional. Pairing with the famous local Iwase sake like Masuizumi and IWA, as well as carefully selected wines, is another highlight. Enjoy the food, drinks, and conversation with the chef in the warm and inviting space created in a renovated traditional townhouse.

40 minutes by car

National Park Amaharashi Coast (Walking & Sightseeing)

Amaharashi Coast is one of the few places in the world where a 3,000-meter high mountain range may be observed from the sea. This stunning scenery changing with the seasons and times of day was immortalized in poetry by Otomo no Yakamochi, the poet who compiled the Man'yoshu collection. One of the favorite spots of photographers, the location is especially famous for the iconic composition with Onna-iwa (Woman Rock) floating in the foreground of Toyama Bay. Capture the perfect shot!
